I woke up to the loud, high-pitched beeping of my alarm clock, and groaned. Without looking up from my pillow, I fumbled for the snooze button, blearily blinking the sleep from my eyes. As I pulled myself from my bed and glanced over at the clock display- 7 am- I realized what day it was. Today was my first day of highschool!

And I only had an hour to get ready! I sprung from my bed, jumping to my closet. I had so many clothes, but none of them seemed right for the occasion. I must’ve tried on thousands of outfits before settling on a simple outfit of darkwash jeans, an oversized white t-shirt, and a dark red flannel I wore as a jacket. I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and tied up my locs into a loose ponytail, before heading down the stairs to grab breakfast.

“Good morning, Hanishadria!” My mom greeted me as I slid down the stair railing, “Did you sleep well!”

“Hi, Mom!” I replied, though I didn’t answer my question. Instead, I approached my little brother, [brother name]. “Hey, bro! Ready for 5th grade?”

“You bet!” He laughed. “I wonder what teacher I’ll get.”

“You should pray you don’t get Ms. Maletichiom,” I advised. “She’s downright evil. I think she was planning on eating me if I flunked.”

“Stop kidding around, Han.” My brother laughed, and I ruffled his hair.

“Hurry up and eat breakfast, boys!” My mom said, and gestured to the massive breakfast spread she’d prepared. There were hot-off-the-griddle pancakes, sizzling strips of bacon, and colorful bowls of cereal. My father was on the otherside, eating a bowl of plain oatmeal, his face hidden by his newspaper.

“Hi, Dad!” I acknowledged as I took my place at the table. Just as I sat down, I caught sight of my wristwatch. It was already 7:30!

“I have to get to school!” I exclaimed. I couldn’t be late on my first day. I grabbed a piece of toast, and made my way to the door. “I’ll see you guys later!”

“Have a nice day at school, dear!” My mom waved.

“I will!” I said, and skateboarded off to school.

My highschool was Temple of Unity High School. I’d been wondering what it would be like since I was [brother’s name]’s age. Now, I would finally learn.

Just as I was about to enter the school, I was interrupted by the sound of my name.

“Han! Over here!” Called one of my two best friends, Sadihak. They were on the other side of the courtyard with my other best friend, Petrai. Sadihak and Petrai were opposites in many ways- Sadihak tall while Petrai was short, Sadihak only ever wearing white while Petrai was borderline goth. Maybe that’s why they both had massive crushes on each other, that the other was oblivious to.

“Hi, Sadi! Hi, Petrai!” I called, and approached my best friends. “First day of highschool, huh?”

“I’m excited to further our academic experiences, and hope this school provides an adequate education.” Petrai said. She was kind of a nerd.

I hope we all get to go to a lot of fun parties!” Sadihak beamed. “Maybe Han will finally have his first kiss.”

“Staaaapphhh, Sadi!” I sighed. Sadihak was too much, sometimes. Out of the corner of my eye- I spotted someone of interest.

It was Yeonaixho- my crush since middle school. He was easy to spot- towering almost a foot over everyone else in school. The warm sunlight rippled in his long, wavy, golden hair, and danced across his scuplted, chisled features.

“Go talk to him!” Sadihak urged, when they spotted me staring at them, and shoved me forward before I could protest.

I stumbled to Yeonaixho, barley stopping myself from falling over him. “Uh, Hello, Yeonaixho!” I choked out, and kept my gaze on the floor.

“Oh, hello, Hanishadria! I didn’t see you there!” Yeonaixho laughed. He’d been blind since birth, but he didn’t let that get him down. “How’re you doing?”

“Haha, yeah.” I blushed. “Are you ready for our first day of highschool?”

“I am!” Yeonaixho smiled. “I’m taking Mx. Ttaeqeri’s Intro To Medicine course this year as an elective, I’m really looking forward to that.”

Before I could reply, I was interrupted by a high-pitched, instantly recognizable voice. “Honeybee! I got our schedules!”

It was Jymaiyri, Yeonaixho’s evil girlfriend. She’d been head of the gardening club for as long as I could remember, and had been dating Yeonaixho for almost the same amount of time. I didn’t know what he saw in her- she was a massive beotch. She’d never said one nice thing to me in the entire time we’d known each other. Even then, I think she hated me extra, since I stopped her unethical fig tree expiriemnts last year.

“Hello, Lilybud!” Yeonaixho cooed, and held Jymaiyri’s hand. It broke my heart to see him being so sweet with someone else, especially when that someone was Jymaiyri. “I was just talking to Hanishadria, and telling him about the Intro to Med class we’re taking.”

“Oh, hello, Sunbird.” Jymaiyri said, casting her evil gaze to me. She had nicknames for everyone. “I don’t suppose you’re also taking that class?”

“No.” I grumbled.

“Oh? What electives are you taking, then?”

“.... architecture 1.”

Jymaiyri laughed at me. She always made fun of me for being ‘dumber than her’, even though we got the same grades, and she was far worse at math than I. “Have fun playing building-blocks while we do real science.”

“Jymairyi, don’t make fun of him.” Yeonaixho chided. My heart went alight- he cared enough about me to defend me, from his own girlfriend! “Han, I’d love to see the buildings you design, if you’d like to share them with me.”

“I will! Once I design them!” I laughed. The schoolbell rang, signifying the beginning of classes in only a few minutes. “Oh, we better get to class, then. I’ll see you later?”

“I hope you will!” Yeonaixho laughed again, and waved to me as I headed off to class.

Most of my classes were boring, but I had my 3rd period class- world history with Ms. Seulleune- with Yeonaixho! Our desks were even right next to each other!

As Ms. Seulleune dragged on about the importance of archival material, my attention remained on Yeonaixho. He was beautiful, even in the artificial, fluorescent light of the classroom. He listened intently to the teacher, rapidly typing up notes on his brailler. An idea popped in my head. I took a scrap of paper from my notebook, jotted a message on it, and folded it up. I handed it to Yeonaixho.

He took the paper, and passed his hands over it a few times. His brow furrowed in confusion.

I was such an idiot! I forgot he couldn’t read print! Dejectedly, I took back the note, and read over what I had written:

happy april fools!
