MASKTOURN

At the center of this courtyard is a large fountain, which provides dubiously fresh water to anyone passing by. The fountain itself is decorated with a statue of a barely-clothed human figure, with long hair and a large jar held at their hip. Water spills from the jar from some unseen source, pouring into the fountain. The statue’s face has broken off, leaving the figure unidentifiable. Clean, pristine, and gleaming, this courtyard is pretty popular with the various birds of the citadel- flocks of crows, gulls, and passerines routinely perch around the fountain and the surrounding benches.

The nausea hadn't entirely faded yet, though it had only worsened now that he was walking about. It had been...eerily quiet here, and incredibly unnerving- and he hadn't exactly seen anyone else here, either. Organized matches; that meant they would have a bit of time before...everything began. Yes. Time. He could take this chance to...gather his thoughts. Ace stood at the mouth of the courtyard he had wandered into, gaze shifting from the birds-fountain-water-statue. They were careful not to disturb the birds perched on the fountains and benches, and found an empty spot for them to sit on the edge of the fountain. They took this time to carefully examine the porcelain mask they had been given, brows pinched together as they ran their fingers along the smooth surface. Darcy wandered from the main square off to a side courtyard, and was surprised to see yet another stranger. Another black tunic- another bird contestant? Ace peered up over the top of their mask at the sudden voice, fingers curling slightly into the porcelain. They lowered it into their lap carefully, taking the briefest of moments to look at them. [A bit on the shorter side, a white robe, squinting slightly at him, but not particularly out of malice? Unsure. Probably not.] "Hello," Ace greeted, raising his hand slightly in a greeting. Hm. That made sense. "I'm Ace Lao," they introduced. "And it's alright, you weren't staring." Shifting slightly to make themself more comfortable, Ace frowned a bit, an eyebrow raised in slight concern. "...They took your glasses," they repeated, tapping their fingers along the porcelain mask. Was it fair to bring someone into essentially a deathmatch with hardly any vision? "That's unfortunate." "Mhm. It is." Darcy scoffed, and crossed his arms. He could, technically, spell cast verbally, but it'd have been easier if he could prepare spells by writing them. Really, now. First, bringing people into a deathmatch, and second, not even providing 'contestants' proper disability aids? He hadn't expected much from Naiyta, but, alas. [Language? A historian, an academic?] The revelation that there had been more of these. Death tournaments certainly didn't do him any wonders. Ace faltered for the tenth of a second, brows pinched deeply in thought. "What exactly do you mean by, 'competing again'?" Ace asked. "You...competed in something similar to this? A cult. A cult. Yes. A cult. "I...see," Ace flatly said, not at all enthralled at learning that this was a cult. Perhaps he should have just gone to sleep after Ellie left him on read. Abilities? Ace blinked slightly at that, the hairs on the back of their neck raising as he continued to speak. Sealing, modifying, fixing them. "I wouldn't be able to recognize those names either," they admitted. "This is the first...'tournament' I've been in. And I'm not particularly keen on attending this, or any others after." "I see..." Ace quietly said after a moment. It certainly was a bit too soon to understand...well, everything. Naiyta's motives, the sides, these fights they had arranged- had Ace spoken to anyone else then maybe he would have had some sort of idea of what to go off of. "I would say it's...fascinating, but given the circumstances...ah." But seeing a former contestant from one of the other tournaments that had been hosted was certainly a good sign. "I understand," Ace hummed, nodding slightly. "It would have been terrifying for anyone going through something by the likes of that." And this, too. Hm. Magic. Yes. Their magic, in particular, had been tampered with. To what extent, he was a bit unsure of. "I have powers, yes," they simply said, managing to keep the waver out of their voice. "I suppose that makes two. Again, you are the only one I've met here, and it still is a bit...too soon to really discern anything." "Three, actually. The other person I spoke to earlier also had powers." Darcy said. He noticed the waver in tone but didn't comment on it."But still, that's not indicative of the whole group of contestants. We'll have to wait and see." After Darcy had had some time to linger around the fountain alone, another figure was slowly approaching. Asha was walking up, her overstuffed purse sitting comfortably off of her shoulder. "And yes, it is very powerful. I blew all of the hosts to pieces when they tried to get me and Juno to fight. And if we get to my fight here, I plan on doing the same. Asha smiled as heard him speak. Swahili wasn't the main language of Mlipuko anymore since they were so close to Ninjago City, but it was still an important historical language to keep up. A lot of the older people didn't know any other languages as well, and Asha always thought they were the most interesting to talk to.. "Yeah, what hallway are you in..? Hm. Seems they were at an impasse. Oh, why weren't there roommates here like the last one! That made things feel less awkward and scary... "I think I passed by some kind of common area on our side when I was walking out- we can meet there." Asha said. Clove’s wandering led her to a towering fountain. Her grip on her black parasol loosened slightly as she gasped in excitement, the handle almost slipping out of her grasp. That would’ve been disastrous! She stopped and stared at the fountain in front of her, most definitely looking a little silly to passerbys. She then made her way to the foot of the fountain and carefully sat down, as not to ruin her robe. With her free hand, she moved to adjust her mask, lest she run into anyone- it was always best to look presentable… @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie

It just so happened that Valerie's wandering also led her to the fountain. She scanned the area and spotted someone else. Valerie smiled casually as she approached the stranger. "Yo," She greeted. Clove’s eyes lit up as the stranger approached her. She immediately noticed the woman was not wearing her mask, and instinctually she decided to remove hers and set it off to the side. “Oh! Good morning!” she hummed as she took Valerie’s hand in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze and a small shake before letting go. “I’m Clove, it’s lovely to meet you, Valerie,” she hummed, then motioned for the other woman to sit with her. “I wouldn’t quite say I’m stuck here, per se, but it sounded like according to the person I spoke to that my line of thinking isn’t the majority.” she held a hand over her mouth as she let out a small chuckle, then shrugged. “I wasn’t expecting the masks or change of attire, though. Valerie glanced towards where Clove was gesturing and took a seat. She laughed along slightly, leaning back on her hands a bit. "Very rude of them to change our outfits without asking. Freaks if you ask me." She rolled her eyes. "But I don't care. I'll do my own personal rebellion of not wearing the mask and wearing my coat." Valerie grinned, flashing her fangs slightly. “I’m glad to have encountered a friendly face,” Clove hummed, her face lighting up. She then let out another soft laugh, this time not bothering to cover her mouth. Valerie would immediately notice her fangs- something they had in common. “Especially since all of this is rather… odd. I’ve met stranger, but still I’m with you,” she agreed with a nod, looking the other woman up and down, just by nature that she was wearing what seemingly was her own coat. Fangs. Valerie's eyes lit up at it slightly. Thank god someone else was like her in this establishment. She already made a forever friend. "Very glad to know there's someone else like me." Those familiar words echoed in his mind as Invo stared wide-eyed at the bright wings in front of him. For just a moment, a fraction of a second, Invo could understand why humans would want this God for themselves. Why they would lie and trick and fool Cansu into bowing to them. Perhaps it was meant to be fear that Cansu strikes—Lightning is a powerful element, after all, but to Invo, it was almost beautiful.

And it's not a matter of if, but only a when and a how. You're strong, but not invincible. Someday, you're going to come across someone you'll regret fighting.

The shock of the lightning wasn't what burned the most on Invo's skin. Of course it hurt, it hurt like fucking hell, but Invo's mind was racing as he felt the water enter his lungs. Water, of course. Cansu was well known for his storms, lightning and water. That had to be the worst combination for Invo. If Invo were to choose a kind of death, drowning would be his last choice. The clogged feeling in his throat, his chest—He needed to scream, but he couldn't. His mother knew that, yet she kept his head under the towel and bucket no matter how much he flailed or struggled. It was for his own good. It was for his training. It was for the Great Hmarab, but still, Invo did everything he could to get it to stop. While Invo struggled to escape the orb of water, Cansu would feel something grab onto his core. It suddenly pulled the God onto the ground with the force of a tackle, breaking some of the flooring they were standing on with the sheer power. The ball of water was already a lot, but being entirely engulfed? After leaving Kyrie and the slight brush by the water, Ryu wandered towards the center if the Citadel. She hadn't explored much of the inner section, so perhaps this would be a good time to. The night was unwelcoming to say the least, but Enya couldn’t quite bring herself to go inside to sleep with the restless energy buzzing through her. At least it’s cool out, as she wanders into the fountain courtyard. The scuffle during the night before pretty much ruined any chance of getting to the refectory before the feast ended, making this their first, actual meal since they'd first arrived here. (The glass of water during that gala was certainly not a meal. Nor was it food.) Ace sat on the edge of the fountain with a sandwich and a bowl of spring rolls. Roman couldn't even look over at Ace, the sensation of the food churning nervously in his stomach was too distracting to him. It was a sensation he still hadn't grown used to, despite it being a near constant sensation since getting his stomach returned in the first place. Without keeping his hands clenched over his mouth, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to keep his meager meal down- and he didn't want to waste that blood from Miriam. "No- they don't care about me. At all. They told m-me this morning that we're not lovers or equals, it's just my Master and my God.." Roman said shakily, and slowly leaned sideways until he was against Ace. Ace shifted so he could hold Roman a bit better, his hand resting on his other shoulder as he leaned against him. The thought of Naiyta saying all of that just made them feel...wildly uncomfortable. They couldn't even begin to fathom how Roman felt after all of this. "I...can't say I fully understand, but I do understand where you're coming from to an extent," Ace quietly said. "I also did speak to Albanes, and she basically said they're overreacting and she's "looking out for her own", whatever that means. Doesn't mean us, I guess. Roman would say some silent prayers for Ace, and headed off to the refectory.. If Naiyta was there, he.. Well, he'd be unhappy, to say the least.

Enya follows all the way down from the acropolis, until the two of them reach the citadel's center. It's there she takes the lead instead and guides Ryu over to sit on one of the benches facing the fountain. The gentle water is a good change of pace. The silence feels heavy, all of a sudden, but nothing she could think to say really even begins fits into the space. It's just sort of...numb, really, as Enya pulls her knees up to her chest and rests her chin on top. @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske

The walk was silent, but Ryu didn't mind. In fact, she figured that was for the best. As Enya led and sat down by the water, Ryu followed like a light. He sat beside Enya, gently wrapping an arm around her shoulders and holding her close to his chest. What else was Ryunoske supposed to do, after all? "...Do you want to talk? Enya doesn't pull away from Ryu's hold, but she also doesn't quite lean into it either. She stares blankly into the rushing water for a long enough moment where it doesn't seem, at first, like she's going to reply. "I don't... I don't know," she admits finally, voice half-muffled by her knees. Another long, silent moment passes. "I haven't known any of the other losers." Gentle circles were drawn into Enya's back as Ryu held her, and she quietly listened to what she said. "It's okay. You don't have to know either," Ryu reassured. Enya closes her eyes and lets Ryu's words simply wash over her for a moment. There's that choked feeling in her throat again, and she's almost entirely certain that if she tried to string together a full reply right now, she'd only just burst into tears. Instead Enya shifts her weight to lean into Ryu's side, head resting against her chest, and murmurs, watery yet soft at the same time, "Thank you." (It almost sounds like it could mean something else.) She seems content to just stay like they are for a while, though. @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske

And Ryunoske was content with that as well. She continued to hold Enya, secure and protective as the silence made peace around them. The crows in the sky were a good distraction as well. She wondered where they all exactly came from. From Kyrie? A parting gift from her to her opponent, perhaps? After a while, Ryunoske glanced down at Enya and gently nudged her. The sound of the running water combined with the birds flocking overhead is just loud enough to muffle Enya's quiet, occasional sniffles. She lets out a shaky breath, uncurling slightly and wincing at the stretch in her knees, before tilting her head to look up at Ryunoske. "Mmhmm?" "Just checking on you," Ryu replies kindly, and gently nudged her cheek against Enya's. "Should we move to somewhere more private..? I think you could use a nice warm cup of tea and blankets." @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

That manages to drag enough of a small smile out of her to be visible. Enya leans into the contact, and after a moment slowly nods. “…Okay,” she says quietly, “That sounds good.” @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske

Ryu smiled in return and stood up. Before Enya could retort, Ryu picked her up bridal style into her arms and started walking off towards the dorms. "Alright. We can use my room then. What sort of tea do you prefer, glowstone?" @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya yelps faintly as she’s swept up, clinging on to Ryu in surprise before realizing she isn’t going to fall unless she makes it so. “Ry—! A little warning next time, maybe?” It’s more tease than serious, but there’s still a little bit there under there. As she relaxes she considers the question. “I, uh.. Ryu chuckles as she looks down at Enya. "Sorry, I just thought you'd want a little help," she said with a half apologetic-half teasing tone. She continued to walk and gave Enya a small hum. "Alright. Enya huffs a small laugh, shaking her head. "I didn't say I was complaining," she shrugs. "But.. M'not really sure I'm up for food right now, honestly.. Just make sure you get something for yourself too?" @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske

Seki let out a small sigh, and relaxed a bit. "Okay, that's good to hear. Hm. I'm going to the bathhouse, and I really wouldn't like it to pop in on us while we're there. It could be anything, really, it doesn't matter. Since it's visible to everyone, I assume, you probably shouldn't write straight forward 'Naiyta is coming' or anything.
