MASKTOURN

A long, bright hallway, lined with doors. The tile floor is decorated with a white, woven rug, and the crown molding on the ceiling is decorated with reliefs of geometric snakes. Sun windows on the roof allow daylight to filter in, illuminating the marble furnishings. Each door is a stone slab, decorated only with the occupant’s name and a small, hand-shaped plaque.

If the occupant of a room places their hand on the plaque, the stone door will rise and grant them entry to the room. If anyone else places their hand on the plaque, they will receive a painful, but harmless, shock.

Well, nowhere better to start than the hallway outside her room. Hands full, Enya takes her time making her way through, checking out the weird stone handprints and nameplates. There’s….more than a few she recognizes. Enough to be almost concerning. What is this, some deranged continuation of the damn thing? She shudders, frowning down at the mask she’s holding, as she moves past door after door. @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Begrudgingly, but because the room was too cramped for him to stay in, Kallum redressed to step outside. Not the mask. Too far. That woman had said he'd die here. He wouldn't. Knowing where he was would help make sure of it. He opened his door and- there was a woman. He stared blankly at her masked face. @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya jumps, blue sparks popping off of her as the door she’s passing by is suddenly yanked open. “Fuck,” she wheezes, tablet clattering out of her hands as she yanks the mask—that she’d impulsively tried on for just a second—off her face. Crouching to grab the tablet, she straightens back up with a sigh. “Sorry, you scared the shit out of me. Jesus.” @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Kallum jolted too- not from her, from the tablet dropping - and stepped back into his room. He wasn't aware he'd been allowed to pick up the tablet. Or move it. He didn't want it anyway. He watched Enya pick the tablet up, eyes locked on it, then he avoided looking at her. Meeting eyes was difficult now. "Okay." @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya glances up at the nameplate above his door, before offering him a somewhat wary grin. “You’re in here with the rest of us, so I’m guessing you got stuck here too huh. I’m Enya. First time?” The question is heavy with a weird sort of bitter sarcasm, but also does seem like she’s expecting an answer. @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Kallum followed where she looked, though at this angle he couldn't see the nameplate. "Kallum." He narrowed his eyes, dared to avert his gaze. One hand on the door, the other pulling at his new clothes. It felt so wrong. Not the right colour or feel. Didn't cover his neck enough, so he forced it to, tugging up the shirt part to cover his neck. "I've never been here before," he eventually answered. @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

“Yeah, neither have I,” Enya sighs. Kallum’s discomfort with the clothing is obvious, but honestly she can’t blame him. Shit’s weird. “Or not.. here, at least, but there was, uh, something similar a few months back. I thought I saw some names I recognized.” She shudders, faintly. “Dunno if you got grabbed by the same fire guy but they knew about that whole thing too. Not sure if we’re lucky or unlucky it might be the same people.” @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Someone thought they knew him but he wasn't going to say that. Not to anybody. "...hm." He nodded, to confirm he was indeed 'grabbed' by the 'fire guy', though he interrupted Enya with, "I control fire too." It was quieter than he meant it, a feat for Kallum, so her words could continue. His hand tugging the shirt tightened into a fist. "You know what this is? If it was similar." @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

“Huh? Oh, really? Hey, me too.” Enya moves on pretty quick from that little tidbit, frowning a little at his question. “I mean, not really. I know what they told me, and they didn’t seem to like the guy who ran the last one.” Her face twists uncomfortably at the thought. “It was called a tournament like this shit is though. I guess you could say it was lower stakes than... All this.” @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Kallum scowled. How dare someone else have fire powers? That was his thing. "Mine are better than yours." He absorbed the information Enya gave but didn't respond to it, his mind turning in its own way, at his own words. His powers were better than hers. He was powerful and the strongest and the youngest- he was supposed to be anyway. Yet two people had fire, and one of them... had brought him here. But someone else had spoken to him, with healing powers. Useless. "Do you know Albanes?" @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya nods, seemingly not at all bothered. “Sure, whatever you say.” It comes off a bit dismissive even if she doesn’t really mean it that way. The name he brings up does sound…vaguely familiar? There’s no face she can attach to the name, but it buzzes in her memory with the sound of faint static. Maybe a student announcement? Or god forbid someone from that whole island PA system deal. “Maybe,” she shrugs. “Might’ve heard it somewhere before. Why?” @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Kallum scowled more but didn't argue. That took too much from him. But he knew the truth at least. The scowl grew at Enya's unhelpfulness. "Nothing. Just a name I know," he mumbled, squeezing even tighter on his clothes tugged to his neck until it hurt him too. "Nothing." @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

“Mhmm.” Enya doesn’t seem to particularly believe him, but she doesn’t push it. “Well I haven’t seen anyone named that listed in this hallway, at least, if you’re looking for them.” @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

"Okay." Kallum considered what he'd learnt. "The tablet. What does it do?" @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya pauses, then glances down at the tablet held awkwardly in her arms. “Uh— Not sure, honestly.” She shoves the mask haphazardly into the weird folds of the robe and just prays it stays there, then fiddles around with the tablet. “I think it’s.. It’s like a messaging thing or something?” There’s a handful of messages there, from who she can only assume to be a few of the others here. Two names she’d seen on the nameplates, but the other two she hadn’t. @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Kallum watched every move, then leant forward slightly to peer at the tablet in Enya's hands. "A messaging thing?" He repeated dryly. "Like email?" That was the extent of his technical knowledge. Mattias answered a lot of emails. He probably was now. To find a replacement. @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya tilts the tablet so Kallum can better see the messages already displayed there. “Looks more like texting,” she shrugs. “I don’t see a keypad but maybe..” Twisting the tablet around reveals nothing but the clay surface—except for the attached stylus that she hadn’t noticed. “Oh you’ve got to be kidding me,” Enya sighs m then mutters half under her breath, “Why is everything here so god damn weird?” She picks up the stylus and scribbles across the surface, watching the message pop up a second later. @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Kallum did not know what texting was. He scrunched his nose up but watched Enya figure it out in real time. It didn't look like email or 'texting', more like writing. "Okay." Well. That mostly explained his questions. He looked Enya up and down and then, without a goodbye, shut the door on her. Sorry Enya. @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya blinks as the door abruptly shuts in her face, but rolls her eyes after a second. “Okay. Bye,” she says slightly louder than normal at the closed door. Whatever. Kind of reminds her of, like, half her students anyways. (“‘Mine are better than yours’, my ass,” she grumbles under her breath as she heads off down the hall.) @soul | kallum 🔥 + peregrine 🎭

Lacey wandered back towards the snake hallway, wanting to take a momentary break from all the exploring she had been doing. Having taken the time to change into one of the outfits that were given to her as she set her own clothes to the side to dry from the sweat that collected on them. She'd have to see if she'd be able to hand wash them later at least. She paused her thoughts, taking a moment to stretch. @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

Asha was just leaving her room, clay tablet in hand. She walked hurriedly down the hall, worry and confusion clear across her face. Only when she nearly barreled straight in to Lacey did she look up from the stone. "Oh- sorry Miss I- I was a bit preoccupied.." Asha said quietly. @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

Lacey jumped a bit in surprise but she only chuckles sweetly. Waving off the awkwardness. "It's alright! It happens it happens. You alright though?" @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

"Yeah, I'm alright.." Asha laughed back, equally awkwardly. She decided to slip the tablet in to her pocket for now. Meeting another woman here, who wasn't the one who kidnapped her, made her feel a bit better.. "What's your name?" @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

"Lacey. You can call me Lacey." She kept smiling. Taking note of the tablet in her hand before looking back to Asha. "You seemed like you were in a big hurry somewhere. Everything okay? Well, given the circumstances obviously..." @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

"Ah- I'm fine, but my husband he.. I think a different universe version of him is out here. His name is Roman." Asha said and glanced down at the clay tablet. ".. I-I wanna go find him, but he seems.. Different.. But Roman is gonna be Roman, I'm sure. He's kind at heart, a little too kind. He should understand." @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

Lacey was not expecting to hear that but well, gods and deities and all that. "Just... I guess be careful? I mean you know him better than me obviously but.. well. If he's from a different universe, you might not know what he's been through compared to your husband. Asha could trust him, right? Sure, maybe she was dead in his universe, but that wasn't surprising. She was probably dead in a lot of universes.. But she also knew that Roman was a bit strange, under all of his niceness. Maybe that part of him was.. Stronger in this one. "I really wanna say I can do it alone but.. She puts a hand on Asha's shoulder. Her smile softer, understanding as she just nods. "I'll be happy to accompany you. I have a trick or two in case things could go south, but it's useless to automatically think of the worse case." She moves her hand away from her shoulder. "I'm Asha." She said, smiling at Lacey ever so slightly. "You say you have some tricks.. What are your powers?" @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

With a quick flick of her hand. A bright green orb appears barely smaller than a basket ball. After testing it she spins it on one of her fingers. "I can't make super complicated stuff, but you'd be surprised bow handy it can be." @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

Asha stared as she used her powers.. "Oh- um.. are your powers making little green balls..?" Asha asked politely. @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

The ball quickly reshaped into a staff like object, easily she twirls it before making it stand and turn into a moderately sized object. Like a vague outline of the pillars and such that's been seen around the ruins. "Well I can make a lot of things. Though again I'm not the best at making them complicated. Or completely made up. Helps to have an idea of how solid or durable a thing I'm trying to mimick when I construct it is. I think one of my brothers compared it to a comic character but I don't really read stuff." She playfully shrugs. Flicking her wrist to make it into a smaller ball this time. The size of a baseball this time as she makes it come back to her hand. "Though I've been practicing for shields. Helps when I gotta babysit so I don't get any spit up." She giggles. And it's almost like the light of her constructs mimicked the slight light coming from her eyes as she used her powers. "Oh! That is very neat!" Asha said and clapped her hands politely. "Shields would be very helpful.. Hah, my littlest one has an anxious tummy, even more than my other two did. Would you like to see my powers?" @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

"If you're comfortable." She shrugs. "I get given the current situation, you might not be." @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

"Nah, I'm actually trying to get good people in on an.. Alliance, or something like that. I can make you something that will help us keep in contact." Asha smiled and held her hands together, palms facing one another. A light, golden light began to shine through the gaps in her fingers. @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

Her eyes widen a bit in surprise seeing the light. Immediately interested. "Oh wow." @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

She kept one palm facing up, and pulled in the fingers from the hand on top to a point in the center of her palm. She began to pull her hand upward, like she was pulling a string out of her hand. From her palm emerged a sparkler- a bit larger and more robust than a normal one. It was about a foot long. Once it had fully emerged, she held it out to Lacey with a smile. "This is a sparkler that when set off is very loud and bright. I'll know the general area it is when it is lit, if you're ever in trouble." Asha smiled, though it faltered as she heard the announcement in her head. ".. Did you hear that too..?" @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

"Ohmy gosh you are so sw-" She paused, looking up as she heard the announcement. "I.... did. Huh. I didn't know there would be something like that here." Tucking the sparkler into her shirt - she really should of kept her leggings on for an actual pocket - she looks back at Asha. "We can probably find out more to help us. And also meet up with your husband not husband if he comes to it." @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

".. There was a dance at the last tournament I went to too.." Asha sighed and wiped her hands off on her robe. "I need to head back to my room before I go out for a while, so you should head on out without me. If there's ever any trouble, you can listen out for my flare." @Barry|Lacey🔦+ Levi🫠

She just nods, though she takes another note of talking to her about the other tournament she apparently was at before. "Stay safe." @Mads | Roman 🥁 Asha 🎆 ? 🪱

After the gala finished, Darcy decided to take some time to look through all the names on the snake doors. He recognized a few, including those of people he already met, but none stood out especially much. @Vanessa | Cansu🐥+Evan🔩+Kal🌟

Cansu traveled down the hallway. He was ready to just get back to his room and avoid the son of Marco. He couldn’t get that current, that sensation, out of his mind no matter how hard he tried. All he did was stew in his displeasure. As he approached his room, there was someone standing outside of the door. "I figured." Darcy said. Surprisingly, Cansu's door was labeled with his name, instead of Enzo's. Darcy glanced to the door directly to the right of Cansu's. "That one's mine. I guess we're neighbors." @Vanessa | Cansu🐥+Evan🔩+Kal🌟

Cansu was definitely intrigued. In all of the announcements, Enzo’s name had been used rather than his. To have something labeled as his own felt rather nice. He looked to where Darcy pointed. The first guy caught his attention. Wings, huh? Interesting. Dark hair too, like the idiot. But not the idiot. The other person, Roman, sounded interesting. He wanted blood? What for? With the mask, Darcy wouldn’t see that his eyes narrowed slightly. Oh yeah, that definitely was the guy Cansu bumped into. “And, his powers? What of his powers?” Cansu asked. “That is, assuming that he even has powers.” He had to. It had to be some type of absorbency-type of ability. .. Okay, so no power absorbency abilities. His abilities didn’t make sense. They were relatively simple powers that shouldn’t have had such an effect on him. Cansu resisted the urge to make a face. No son of Marco Vanth could be ‘cool.’ No son of his could be ‘energetic,’ ‘friendly,’ ‘an optimist.’ It simply wasn’t in his blood to be like that. It had to be an act. No one could genuinely be that way, especially someone like him. “Would you say that it’s genuine?” Cansu asked. “Or is it perhaps a facade to trick others into a sense of comfort, given the fact that we’re in a tournament? "Well- I don't usually go into conversations thinking people are putting up a facade. And Kal's just about the most genuine person I've ever met. “You’re in the presence of the Thunderbird of Cerau, deity of thunder and water.” Dramatic ass deity’s voice echoed in the hallway. His wings extended out as lightning radiated from the feathers. Wind picked up around the two of them. @innsjo | kyrie🪶+ darcy🖋+npcs

Darcy was, admittedly, a little freaked out by all that. "Whoa- hey, there's no need for dramatics." He stepped back, closer to his door. @Vanessa | Cansu🐥+Evan🔩+Kal🌟

Darcy carefully took the ring, and turned it around in his hand. He held it pretty close to his face, so he could see the details, and pretty quickly noticed the inscription written on the inside. "Huh, there's something written in here..." He gently wiped away some of the grime that had accumulated on the ring's surface. "It looks like braille, I think it's initials. After Enya's victory, Ryu dragged Valerie back to their room building. He wanted to catch Enya as soon as possible, and assumed she would come here to rest. "I can't believe that freak.. Enya won, but fucking christ that fight.." Ryu grumbled as she walked here with Valerie under his arm. "Do you see her anywhere, Val? Enya doesn’t seem to be anywhere in the hallway at the moment—but the sharp burning smell in the air, and the charred marks in the hallway’s rug, are definitely two pretty good signs she’s been here. @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske

Spotting the marks in the rug, Ryu followed them with quick speed and percision, still pulling Valerie along. "Glowstone! Where are ya?!" She called out, a sense of worry to her tone. @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

About halfway down the hallway is a door that’s cracked open, ever so slightly. As Ryu and Valerie approach, they’d be able to see Enya’s name on the nameplate, as well as the faint flicker and crackle of small flames coming from the inside. There’s no immediate response to both of their calls. But, after a few moments, eventually Enya’s face appears in the crack—not quite hiding behind the door, but not quite opening it either. She looks pale, still covered in dirt and ash with reddened eyes, and still with that almost tinted glow beneath her skin. Even with the door between them, they’d be able to feel the heat radiating off of her. It seems to take a second for Enya to process who’s there. “..Ry? Valerie hesitated for a few moments before she approached Enya. She stood a good arms length away from her, not too close or not too far. "Hey," She greeted slowly. "Enya, sweetheart, are you alright? Are you able to come out of the room?" She asked softly. "You're alright now, yeah? Unlike Valerie, Ryu didn't hesitate to walk towards Enya when she heard her voice. She stopped a little closer to the door, and very gently pressed her hand against it to push it in even the smallest inch wider. "Glowstone... It's okay, it's just us, like Val said," she calmly spoke, Ryu's voice a pitch softer than usual. She looked over Enya and slightly frowned. It was hard seeing Enya like this again. For Enya, it had been a few months already, but for Ryu, she had seen the similar look of dread and despair on Enya's face not even a week ago. Someone like Enya deserved to be smiling. Valerie’s approach has her tensing, but it’s Ryu pushing the door that sends Enya flinching backwards and the flames within the room crackling louder. “No, don’t—! Don’t,” she breathes, throat aching and voice shaky and exhausted. “It’s— You can’t come in, y-you— You’ll get burned too—“ The stressed tears that well up in her eyes evaporate with a quiet sizzle before they can even touch her cheeks. Ryu, with her hand against the door, would be able to feel how hot the stone was just from Enya’s closeness to it. Luckily, there seems to be minimal smoke, so it’s likely that she’s managed to keep any of the furniture from burning (completely) despite the blue flames in the room. “I-I can’t—…” @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske (edited)

"Hey...hey, breathe." Valerie said. "Take a deep breath, sweetheart." She frowned. Valerie looked at Ryu for a few seconds, eyeing her as if to look to her for guidance before she turned her head back to Enya, placing her hand on the door. "Enya. Breathe. Please, let us in we want to help you- I can take a few burns, we just want to help you and make sure you're okay." Valerie, despite it all, extended her hand, towards the crack in the door. Ryu met Valerie's gaze, patience and warmth in her eyes before turning back towards Enya. Ryu exhaled a blue colored smoke as she felt the burning of the door. She wasn't going to run away. "It'll be okay, glowstone. Trust us," Ryu smiled. "I'm going to try something, but I'm going to need you to breathe like Valerie said. Breathe, and continue breathing. It's going to be okay." The smoke Ryu exhaled slowly turned into shades of yellow, blending into the blue like a gradient. @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

The request is simple enough. She wants to. So why can't she? "I can't," Enya repeats desperately, chest heaving as she backs up a few steps further. "I-- You need to go, I don't-- I'm not--" I'm not safe, not right now. She wants so badly to let them in, but to risk hurting either of them? It isn't worth it. The flames behind her, struggling for purchase on the tile and stone, lick at her the closer she draws. Her chest hurts. Her head hurts. Her freshly-healed ribs still hurt. It's a struggle--and a painful one at that--to draw in one gasping breath after another. But she tries, and she doesn't notice the smoke, mixing with the smell of burnt wood and fabric and hair, as slowly it curls its way into her lungs: a cool, calm wave gently rippling outwards. Her breathing begins to even, tension gradually loosening, until she's leaning heavily with trembling limbs against the wall for support and relief, overriden by hazy confusion, floods her eyes. Unfortunately, while the external flames begin to die down, it's not enough to quench the stifling, sharp heat that emanates from her directly. @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske (edited)

As the smoke filled the air, Valerie too couldn't help but relax at the sensation. She let out a small sigh of relief. With Enya calmed down, Valerie opened the door, catching Enya as she fell into her arms. As the heat burned her, Valerie winced slightly, only letting out a small hiss of pain before helping Enya get back to her feet with a relived smile. "Careful, Enya." She said slowly. "Sorry about the door...I didn't wanna scare you but, I think it's best for all of us to move rooms, we don't want you to panic, okay?" She looked at the other with a warm smile. Ryunoske waited for a moment as Valerie opened the door. The smoke, the heat, the smell... It made Ryu's gaze tighten, but she stepped in not too long after Val. The smoke continued to circle around them, continuing to give both women the calming effects as they spoke. She glanced over Valerie's burns and frowned, before turning towards Enya. "We are not going anywhere without you, glowstone. Just focus on breathing," Ryu calmly said as she gestured for Valerie to hand over Enya. "I'll carry her. We can move to my room. It's right down the hall." @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie @em || enya 💥 + kenji 🌫

Enya’s knees buckle as soon as Valerie opens the door, and with a thin, choked sob, she crumples into Valerie’s arms. The sudden contact not only blisters Valerie’s skin but hers as well, and a pained and fearful gasp escapes her at the sound as she tries to separate them. She doesn’t want to panic either, but…well. At least, if it wasn’t for the effects of Ryu’s smoke, it would have been much worse. Between the smoke and her own exhaustion, though, Enya isn’t really able to put up much of a protest beyond weakly shaking her head as she’s passed from Val to Ryu. Her eyes are screwed shut, breathing harsh and shaky, but it’s not enough to prevent the contact burn to both of them this time either. The most Enya can do, stuck in a mixed haze of both panic and calm, is hold back the heat—with a nauseating amount of effort, her skin goes cold as she forces the burning temperatures inward and her heartbeat skyrockets. Burning them anymore is out of the picture, and she just barely manages to choke out, “I’m sorry.”. She can hold on until there’s more space. @Cap | Eremurus + Valerie @Aj | Invo + Ryunoske (edited)

Ryu slightly winced as he took Enya, but her hold was strong and reassuring. She held Enya bridal style and turned down the hall. The burning stung even after Enya tried to keep herself cool, but it wasn't a pain Ryu wasn't used to. "We're fine, glowstone. You're doing so well. Keep on breathing, just like that," Ryu smiled down at Enya even though she knew Enya was keeping her eyes shut. It’s not exactly clear if Enya really processes the other two’s words, but her breathing does seem to be getting less ragged. Either that or it’s the fact that she keeps holding it. At least thanks to shutting her body temperature down, she’s no longer completely glowing! Unfortunately, it’s not something that likes to be forced—the exertion of holding control makes a cold sweat bead on her forehead.
